Vertigo
Vertigo is the feeling of dizziness caused by disorders that affect the vestibular system.
Vertigo and Balance
Our ability to move around and maintain postural stability without falling over is known as balance. To maintain balance, the brain requires input from our vestibular system. The vestibular system is complex and comprises organs including the utricle, saccule and three semi-circular canals, all of which are linked to the inner ear (cochlea). If any of the vestibular organs are impaired, the brain receives erroneous information, which results in a sensation of dizziness.
Vertigo is the feeling of dizziness caused by disorders that affect the vestibular system. Vertigo can have a profound impact on your quality of life often leading to significant disability.
Although vertigo, dizziness and related symptoms affect people of all age groups, they are more prevalent in older individuals. It is estimated that dizziness is the number one complaint in people over the age of 70 years.
